Creative Juices.......Or Is It Gun Oil? Part III - HK MSG-90

So it is time to move on. I have shown you my inital thinking about how to remain in a Marksman role even if the nature of your mission changes. Close Combat and FIBUA can still accomodate your skill provided you choose / create a carefully selected weapon.

But let's be honest if the truth be known all you want to do in a Marksman role is to take the enemy one by one from distance.

There is a variety of Sniper weapons on the airsoft market and as all airsofters know, their designation as Sniper weapons is a bit dubious. In Real Steel situations a decent marksman can take the performance of his weapon in excess of other weapons in the squad. In airsoft its not really that different. That is unless you decide to use everything the law gives you to play with.

In the UK the maximum single shot limit at most airsoft sites is 500 feet per second with a 0.20g bb. When you take this into comparison with normal AEG's only being allowed 328 feet per second, you are gaining an extra 50% but sacrificing automatic fire.

Fundamentally as a marksman if you have to sacrifice automatic fire you require a lot better accuracy. Enter the next and final (i promise), Heckler and Koch-a-like:

The MSG-90

As you can see from the picture above or at least from the link, the MSG-90 looks just like a G3 SG-1. Its heritage is certainly closer to that, than the PSG-1 that has claimed so much fame in the media. As a result it also helps you as an airsoft customiser to find parts.

To get a close to perfect look I would suggest sourcing the following. It will push the power limit close to 500fps and will offer better than average accuracy. However do remember than to remain legal you will have to 'neuter' the fire selector to only allow semi and safe.

The MSG-90 in my opinion is better looking than the PSG-1. It was designed for military use and it is a lower cost alternative to the pricey PSG-1. It is certainly a weapon which is not common on the skirmish field, unlike the M14 and SPR variants of late.

The beauty of this weapon is much like the SR25. You can utilise the semi automatic action and higher capacity magazines over conventional bolt action rifles. This means that though you have sacrificed full auto, such a loss for a marksman with a scope and quick action semi, is not a loss at all.

Finally remember that there is one other advantage to owning this weapon. You can make it look just like a regular 'run of the mill' SG-1, and no one will blink an eyelid at you. Well, not until you begin dropping them one by one!

As promised, here is my creation for a suitable H&K G36 battle rifle. (The picture to the left is a stock photo, not the finished product of this blog).I am a big fan of all things H&K and make no secret of this. However it certainly says a lot when the Real Steel version can be covered in sand, water, and have all manner of things done to it, and still fire 25000 rounds without stoppage.

With this version I was more interested in its use as a primary role. It is for this reason that I added a full stock to it. This allows for better balance of the weapon, as well as more option over battery sizes.

Once again I have tried to keep the modular aspect of the rifle clean. M16 magazines are carried by pretty much everyone. If you play alone, or in a team of various rifles you will never be far away from an M4 or M16 variant.

It is part of the injustice of this world that allows me three torturous things. A love for Airsoft, imagination and the Internet.

Lately I have spent too many hours pondering over airsoft retailer websites. The vast assortment of items to increase your fps, increase your 'Gucciness' or just increase your stock length are fantastic. I look with glistening eyes at the screen late into the night mentally configuring my weapons. Hours whizz past and I find myself no further forward than I was six hours previous.

The major problem is not the time, or loss of it, but more the lack of commitment. Yes, I am a man. I lack commitment to my weapons. There I said it.

From one day to the next I change my 'dream' loadout. Lately I have remained stalwart to my conviction that I perform (if that word can ever be used with me) far better in a DM or Designated Marksman role. It literally comes from my inate ability at remaining motionless and inactive for immense periods of time. So to combine this 'ability' with airsoft, I require an accurate long range weapon.

I look. I look at Tokyo Marui VSR's, Maruzen APS2's, Tanaka M700's and then give up. What I long for are special, not mass produced, but I'm not able to afford the custom made weapons. It is then when the personal customisation thought dwells with me. Then it all gets worse. I will spend hours looking at springs, pistons and parts to finally decide that a stock G36C is quite cool.

Infuriating is but a word.

Below I have put together a list of current ideas for my custom creations. All are commercially available, because I am not, nor ever will be, a lathe man.

My thinking behind this has been primarily CQB (CQC in the US). There is a reason behind this. Firstly, as a sniper or marksman in the airsoft world, you are usually restricted to engaging at ranges of 30ft or less. This leaves you terribly exposed in environments where the maximum range is less than 30ft. Think FIBUA or CQB. So it was my idea to combine a CQB weapon with suitable accuracy and the capability to be 'modular' allowing for a coherence between it and perhaps an SPR or SR-16. After all the Armalite series of weapons are the most popular, and with the Private Parts (it is a Real Steal part too you know) magazine conversion, it saves BadgerOne valuable coin.

I did consider fitting a G&P 4x scope (inc rail) to it, but that kind of removes the benefit of having a short light close quarters weapon. The bigger handguard was added in preference to a full stock (which I would prefer), but again would defeat the point of having an 'up close and personal' weapon.
