Tokyo Marui New SOPMOD M4

"There is already an enormous slew of M4 and M16 variants on the market, making one question the logic of releasing yet another M4. The M16 was developed in the 1960s making this design almost 5 decades old yet it is still in wide use with various military organizations today. Over the years this rifle has gone though many iterations including an overhaul of its internal firing mechanism and conversions to gas piston operation over the original gas tube design.
This variant is the CARBINE 5.56mm M4 A1 M.W.S. (Modular Weapon System) more commonly known as the M4A1 SOPMOD (Special Operations Peculiar MODification), featuring a flat-top receiver and a set of rails to mount accessories. What this all means is that you are free to attach vertical grips, folding grips, grenade launchers, masterkey shotguns, scopes, aimpoints, reflex sights, night vision scopes, lasers, flashlights, iPhones and anything else that you can fit on a standard 20mm rail.
But in the mass of currently available Airsoft Armalites (M4 and M16 type rifles and carbines) almost all of the modern variations have RIS (Rail Interface Systems) or RAS (Rail Attachment Systems). This gun differs from the traditional AEG by having blowback, a recoil engine, and a functioning bolt catch, but is this enough to stand out from the quite substantial crowd of competitors?

The rails are numbered making it easier to remember exact configurations.
From the get-go you notice a deviation from all of Tokyo Marui's previous M4s. The body is aluminum, the barrel is a single piece of aluminum, the rails are aluminum. All this new metal makes the gun weigh 300g (0.7 lb) more than the older Tokyo Marui M4A1 at 3.1 kilos (6.8 lb), making this replica match almost exactly to the real steel, which weighs 3 kilos loaded (6.6 lb). However it feels a little lighter than the plastic m4 because the center of gravity is exactly above the trigger. Another effect of all the new metal parts is that the notorious barrel wobble that plagued earlier versions of plastic guns is gone. This thing is solid as a rock. The new materials mean your shots will fly straight and true and this gun will take much abuse. The trademarks on the gun are true to the real steel and are cast into the aluminum lower receiver along with 'safe', 'semi' and 'auto'.

The finish on this gun is excellent with jet-black powder coating covering all major metal surfaces. The seam lines are visible but not glaringly obvious and the color of the ABS stock and grip match the body perfectly. On the front RAS, the slot numbers are printed on in white to let you easily remember accessory configurations. The selector, trigger, bolt-catch, magazine catch, sights, stock locking lug, and pins have all been treated and have a metallic finish to them providing contrast to the body.

There are a multitude of features on this gun, mainly due to a completely new gearbox design. There is a blowback function like on many recent releases, which features a buffer spring between the piston and the bolt carrier to prevent jams from the carrier getting caught on something. The dust cover flips open upon firing or charging the cocking handle, just like the real steel. The front sight is adjustable for elevation with an included tool, and the rear sight is adjustable for both range and windage. Notice that the rear sight is a shortened, compact type rather than the full carry handle to allow for optics to be mounted on the receiver without removing the rear sight. The stock stored the battery and is a collapsible crane type stock that stores the battery, and sits on a six-position stock tube that gives maximum options for length of pull.

The battery uses low-resistance contacts previously found mainly in AEPs.

The battery is the easiest fit of all AEGs i've ever had the privilege to handle, no wires or cramming into sight spots. Just slide it in and you're done.
In preparation to shoot, the battery must be charged. The SOPMOD uses it's own type of battery with unique connector contacts for insertion into the crane stock, not dissimilar than Tokyo Marui's MP7 or EBB batteries. The battery is clipped to the adapter that is then attached to the specific Tokyo Marui SOPMOD charger. Replacing the battery on the SOPMOD is how ALL BATTERIES SHOULD BE CHANGED. It is so easy and streamlined (check out the video to see for yourself). You squeeze of the stock butt plate by pressing on two latches and the plate pops right off, but is secure enough that it shouldn't come of in a skirmish. Slide in the battery in and replace the cover. No fiddling with different sized connecter pins, or wrestling with the wires to fit into a cramped space. It is a drop-in operation. And by using two tracks of connecters along the inside of the crane stock, the stock can be collapsed all the way even with a battery inside. It would be nice to see other companies and models of guns utilizing specially made battery compartments and contacts. On the other hand, such a system limits the aftermarket battery and stock options available for the SOPMOD, making it incompatible with other stock tubes or even stocks.

The lever at the back of the magazine is responsible for activating the bolt-stop.

A 430 round magazine is available for those of us with itchy trigger fingers.
You'll need a speed loader to load the standard 82 round magazine as the SOPMOD does not come with a loading tube, but the loading tube makes a poor excuse of a loading tool anyway. Immediately upon glancing at the magazine you can see that it is not a standard m4 magazine. The M4 SOPMOD magazine is longer. That's because the SOPMOD's magazine is closer to the real steel length and will fit better in pouches made for real magazines. As an added plus, the magazine follower is longer than the average midcap's and will feed every last bb. A high capacity magazine is also available in 430 rounds but lacks the ability to feed every last round and to activate the bolt stop when empty.

When your midcap is empty, the bolt catch protrudes and requires you to tap it before resuming the carnage.

Which brings me to the most interesting feature on the SOPMOD. The bolt catch. Previously this has solely been the domain of Systema Professional Training Weapons and Gas guns. What this function does is it makes the weapon cease to fire after the last round has left the chamber. This works by the follower pressing up against a series of levers once the last round is loaded. The lever can be seen from the upper rear section of the magazine. This in turn disconnects the power from the motor causing the M4A1 SOPMOD from firing blanks while an empty magazine is loaded. To resume firing, you remove the empty mag and hit (gently please) the bolt catch. On the real M4 the bolt is then released from a held-back position to load another round into the chamber ready for firing. On the SOPMOD it simply re-engages the motor. This is the same method of reloading from the real firearm making this one realistic piece of airsoft hardware to shoot and skirmish with.

To add even more realism this m4 has a blowback and recoil engine. On semi auto, the recoil is little, simply giving a reassuring thump on your shoulder every time you shoot. It is not enough to put you off target but it's there and noticeable. Compared to the recoil felt from a WESTERN ARMS GBB M4 I'd reckon it's about 20-30% as strong. On full auto the recoil is more substantial and the gun jumps in your hands. I also noticed that the blowback slamming home at every shot overpowered the engine noise and made an amazing CLACK-CLACK-CLACK-CLACK noise as it shot the shooting experience easy to describe: AWESOME!

During the accuracy test shooting the kick made the gun rock in your hands quite hard, it definitely felt like it was affecting your aim but i managed to squeeze of quite a good grouping for ten meters. The pictures of the targets really do it justice. This is an accurate gun right out of the box. The full auto accuracy test surprised me. I was expecting much larger groupings but it turns out the groupings were about the same so the rocking motion was actually not affecting the aim that much, just making it a little harder to keep your eye on the sights.


The only downside for this gun is the lack of non-RIS-attachable custom parts available, however you can still choose from a wide variety of RIS-attachable parts like, vertical grips, RIS covers, lasers, flashlights and grenade launchers, in addition to silencers or other muzzle devices. The realistic reloading and recoil engine makes this gun one of the most fun that i have had the privilege to shoot. The availability of both midcap magazines with the realistic stop-function and high capacity for those who desire it. Combined with very high out-of-the-box accuracy and an authentic look and feel i come to the conclusion that this gun has all the bang that you can expect from a high quality manufacturer."

If it wasn't for my fascination with all things HK, I would jump onto that quickly! However, if this type of AEG proves popular, which no doubt it will, then I think we can expect a collection of favourites resurfacing.....

Tokyo Marui AK74MN at Wolf Armouries

I know the second exciting installment of my airsoft creativity seems a bit short, but I have just stumbled across some hot news. I think I've fallen in love.

Type:

The AK74 is an updated version of the infamous AK47 being chambered for a smaller round and enjoying improved construction. The Marui airsoft version combines excellent reliability, an improved power output, metal body and most notably an electric blowback. This means the bolt flies back each time you fire a shot, making it extremely realistic and loud! This is by far one of the best airsoft replicas yet and marks a new standard for future guns.

Unlike Marui previous releases, the AK74 has a metal receiver making it feel very realistic and also giving it strength to ensure it will last.

Systema Revolution Gearbox

We received one of these working prototypes from Systema this month, and have been very impressed with the response and performance of this incredible new design. For those unfamiliar with this famous company, Systema is to Marui like what AMG is to Mercedes Benz. From the masterminds of AEG upgrade technology and the creators of the Professional Training Weapon; the Revolution gearbox from Systema makes a leap to improve the AEG operation by deriving PTW technology into a shell, that drops right in the place of your obsolete Version 2 gearbox. Featuring a revolutionary (pun intended) design free of sensitive parts like the tappet plate, cut-off lever and anti-reverse latch, this computer controlled piece of intelligent engineering is really racing to develop the breed. The gearbox of the Marui Man from 1991 is ready for a well deserved retirement! You can now turn your traditional Marui-design automatic electric gun into an economical version PTW!

Scheduled to be released in time for the summer season of 2008, the Systema Revolution gearbox is the future top-tier solution for upgrading an AR-15 type AEG that uses a Version 2 gearbox. The Revolution is a drop-in fit for the Tokyo Marui M4/M16 series, and will fit most other brands as well, provided that they are made to a high enough standard and measurements close to Tokyo Marui. As with the traditional full gearbox upgrades from Systema, we are not expecting any issues using this with G&P and Classic Army receivers. ICS will not be compatible, due to the split design and modified receiver dimensions.

Compatibility with the V2 gearbox stops at the surface. The Systema Revolution gearbox mimics the V2 on the outside so it can be used with the common AEG, but an entirely different heart is beating on the inside. Note the extra beefy walls of this near gearbox, which is designed to withstand high powered springs for mind-blowing power levels unseen in traditional Marui-type guns.

ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT
An ingenious trigger unit called the E.C.U. is integrated into the Revolution. As the trend is with high performance electric guns, the design uses MOSFET components to allow a smooth flow of electrons from the battery to the motor, and eliminate arcing and high currents from the trigger unit. Instead of a mechanical cut-off lever, the E.C.U. has an optical sensor to detect the movement of the sector gear at all times.

First of all, the optical sensor allows the factory-programmed chip to make the gun shoot once on semi, and once only. Even a quick tap on the trigger activates the cycle, which doesn't leave the spring half-cocked like a traditional AEG does. This feature was exclusive for the PTW, but now it is available for AEG users as well.

Because the E.C.U. "knows" the position of the gears at all times, it will always stop the firing cycle in the same spot. Adding more current or active braking (by reversed polarity) when necessary, the E.C.U. keeps the shooting cycle consistent shot after shot. This allowed to omit another small mechanical part, namely the anti-reversal latch. Less moving parts translates to fewer mechanical problems!

The E.C.U. makes a proper three round burst possible as well, instead relying on complex mechanical parts or an inconsistent timer system as seen in older designs. As with real firearms, the burst stops as soon as the trigger is released, even if three rounds were not fired at that point. In fact, this circuitry can allow programming any number of rounds to be fired automatically on each trigger pull. So a 6 or 7 round burst is possible though it's not clear at this point whether Systema will make that user programmable.!

MECHANICAL ADVANCEMENTS
The tappet plate is one Achille's heel of a traditional AEG gearbox design. Why reinforce it when you don't even need one? Pioneered with the PTW, the Revolution gearbox has a new nozzle design; the loading movement is achieved with a flexible fit to the piston head. This makes the nozzle movement linear, and eliminates the old fragile part from the equation entirely. The nozzle is pulled back and released from an O-ring within the piston head as the piston moves. As a fine side-effect we expect the gearbox to be even more durable in the front, compared to the reinforced V2 gearbox.

The piston is considered to be the "consumable" part in any AEG. With the Revolution, this is addressed again with a PTW-style solution. By reducing the spring diameter, Systema achieved more freedom in the design of the piston. It is now an enclosed polymer part with an all steel tooth rack below, while other metal tooth piston designs have been open from the "belly" to allow sufficient space for the tooth rack. As a result the spring does not rub against metal, and the tooth rack stays on under the load of even the strongest springs. In case you were wondering, this is not the traditional red cylinder offered by Systema in the past for regular gearbox upgrades. This is the same super strong piston (which also happens to be red color) used in the PTW MAX guns.

THE REVOLVING REVOLUTION
As the gearbox was improved so far ahead compared to a traditional design already, Systema decided to make the gear train their way, instead of reinforced parts following the Tokyo Marui form. The gear train consists of four gears to transfer the power from the motor to the piston. The sector gear has a slightly larger module (tooth size) to engage the piston, and is fitted with 7 mm bearings for strength. Two spur gears and a bevel gear are machined to tight tolerances with a smaller module to reduce gear noise and improve efficiency. These three gears are supported by two 6 mm ball bearings each, and allow a wide range of gear ratios to be developed later on.

Because of the additional gear in the gear train, the motor was redesigned to run in reverse. While a DC motor would turn the other way simply by reversing polarity, it will not give peak performance in the "wrong" direction. The motor of the Revolution gearbox features superbly strong Neodymium rare earth magnets, ball bearings, a steel pinion and hand-wound armament for the highest performance money can buy.

"The Tokyo Marui Heckler & Koch G36C has been awaited for with anticipation and in the short time from its release it has become one of the most successful replica’s available.

This replica is based on the Heckler & Koch G36C which is a compact version of Heckler & Koch G36; which gives the G36C the dimensions of a submachine gun, but with the firepower and penetration of a rifle round. This makes the Tokyo Marui Heckler & Koch G36C a modern, compact and an extremely functional replica, just like what it is based on.
The Tokyo Marui G36C replicates nearly all the features of the real H&K gun and many of these are extremely useful in Airsoft. The first of these is the use of picatinny rails on the carry handle for mounting sighting devices and under the handguard, perfect for vertical grips. Other optional picatinny rails can be purchased and these mount on the sides of the handguard giving even more flexibility.

Both the cocking lever to access the hop-up and the fire selector are both ambidextrous, perfect for both right and left handed users. The magazines have one of the most interesting and useful features, just like the real G36 magazines they can be clipped together easily without the need for magazine clamps. The included Tokyo Marui H&K G36C Standard 50 Round Magazine also features realistic plastic bullets that are visible through the semi transparent magazine body and hide the feeding mechanism, giving a very realistic look.
The Tokyo Marui G36C is powered by a Mini-SD type battery which is located in the handguard, this is easily accessed by removing a single pin and removing the handguard from the gun. Just like the real Heckler & Koch G36C the Tokyo Marui replica features a folding stock which allows the gun to be carried and stored very easily. This folding stock is also extremely well made and robust which gives both the stock itself and the gun a solid feel.

Another great feature of this gun is the use of the EG1000S motor, giving improved speed, torque, efficiency and has a quieter running noise. All of these features have combined to make one of the most popular Airsoft rifles ever produced.
