As we all know there is a multitude of combinations to increase the power, range etc of your AEG. So what is the actual effect of some of these changes?

Do heavier BBs increase velocity?

It is common knowledge that changing your bb weight is a way to change your gun's FPS but this is more pronounced in gas weapons. Because the gas in the barrel is expanding throughout the entire firing cycle the bb is accelerating for the entire length of the barrel. This means that the change in velocity from having a longer barrel is much more pronounced than on an AEG where the spring and piston provide a more constant push that reaches it's terminal velocity much faster.

To show the effects of different barrel lengths on the FPS change caused by changing bb weights, we use two G&P Western Arms Official Custom gas blowback armalite based guns. The G&P WOC SPR, and The G&P WOC Tank.

The Barrel length on the SPR does not actually extend all the way to the end for the reasons described above; to keep the power down to a reasonable and skirmishable level. As shown in the picture, the inner barrel ends abruptly at 230 mm down the length of the outer barrel, which is to say about half the length of the outer barrel.

In the G&P WOC Tank, the barrel extends all the way to the very tip of the inside of the flash-hider and can be seen by looking into the barrel at an angle (don't look directly into any barrel, EVER). It is 170mm in length.

Each gun was chronoed 5 times with each weight of bb tested. 0.12g, 0.20g and 0.25g bbs. then the average was taken as the FPS for that weight and gun. The same magazine was used for both guns to keep the test as accurate and reliable as possible. The temperature during the test was 27.3°C and the relative humidity was 90%.

170mm 'Tank' 230mm SPR

0.12g BBs 399fps 420fps
395fps 424fps
402fps 419fps
395fps 425fps
401fps 427fps
Average: 398fps 423fps

0.20g BBs 341fps 373fps
344fps 373fps
339fps 375fps
339fps 372fps
344fps 372fps
Average 341fps 373fps

0.25g BBs 324fps 357fps
324fps 341fps
322fps 347fps
324fps 357fps
330fps 344fps
323fps 349fps
Average 324fps 349fps

Next the FPS was converted to Joules, using the formula K=½(mv²). Or using a convenient converter like the one found in www.cimmerians.org/FPS_Converter.html

170mm 'Tank' 230mm SPR

0.12g BBs 0.88 1.00
0.20g BBs 1.08 1.29
0.25g BBs 1.21 1.42

On the G&P WOC 'Tank' with a 170mm barrel, the lighter BBs caused BB energy to drop by 19% due to it spending less time in the barrel. while on the G&P WOC SPR with a 230mm barrel, it dropped 22%. This just goes to show that changing the BB weight changes the overall muzzle energy quite drastically by lightening the BB. So for those of us skirmishing in CQB conditions, we suggest only using 0.20g BBs to avoid injury.

Using heavier BBs caused the 'Tank's power to rise by 12% and the SPR's power to rise by 10%. Due to the bb staying in the barrel longer and therefore accelerating and building up energy longer.

Using the information will hopefully let players better understand the physics behind gas blowback gun velocity and power and use this information to skirmish safely.

Flecktarn News

Our latest products for March 09 are listed at: http://www.flecktarn.co.uk/

We are very pleased to announce that we have the latest line of Bulle BDU uniforms. The M16 was developed in the 1960s making this design almost 5 decades old yet it is still in wide use with various military organizations today. Over the years this rifle has gone though many iterations including an overhaul of its internal firing mechanism and conversions to gas piston operation over the original gas tube design.
This variant is the CARBINE 5.56mm M4 A1 M.W.S. (Modular Weapon System) more commonly known as the M4A1 SOPMOD (Special Operations Peculiar MODification), featuring a flat-top receiver and a set of rails to mount accessories. What this all means is that you are free to attach vertical grips, folding grips, grenade launchers, masterkey shotguns, scopes, aimpoints, reflex sights, night vision scopes, lasers, flashlights, iPhones and anything else that you can fit on a standard 20mm rail.
But in the mass of currently available Airsoft Armalites (M4 and M16 type rifles and carbines) almost all of the modern variations have RIS (Rail Interface Systems) or RAS (Rail Attachment Systems). This gun differs from the traditional AEG by having blowback, a recoil engine, and a functioning bolt catch, but is this enough to stand out from the quite substantial crowd of competitors?

The rails are numbered making it easier to remember exact configurations.
From the get-go you notice a deviation from all of Tokyo Marui's previous M4s. The body is aluminum, the barrel is a single piece of aluminum, the rails are aluminum. All this new metal makes the gun weigh 300g (0.7 lb) more than the older Tokyo Marui M4A1 at 3.1 kilos (6.8 lb), making this replica match almost exactly to the real steel, which weighs 3 kilos loaded (6.6 lb). However it feels a little lighter than the plastic m4 because the center of gravity is exactly above the trigger. Another effect of all the new metal parts is that the notorious barrel wobble that plagued earlier versions of plastic guns is gone. This thing is solid as a rock. The new materials mean your shots will fly straight and true and this gun will take much abuse. The trademarks on the gun are true to the real steel and are cast into the aluminum lower receiver along with 'safe', 'semi' and 'auto'.

The finish on this gun is excellent with jet-black powder coating covering all major metal surfaces. The seam lines are visible but not glaringly obvious and the color of the ABS stock and grip match the body perfectly. On the front RAS, the slot numbers are printed on in white to let you easily remember accessory configurations. The selector, trigger, bolt-catch, magazine catch, sights, stock locking lug, and pins have all been treated and have a metallic finish to them providing contrast to the body.

There are a multitude of features on this gun, mainly due to a completely new gearbox design. There is a blowback function like on many recent releases, which features a buffer spring between the piston and the bolt carrier to prevent jams from the carrier getting caught on something. The dust cover flips open upon firing or charging the cocking handle, just like the real steel. The front sight is adjustable for elevation with an included tool, and the rear sight is adjustable for both range and windage. Notice that the rear sight is a shortened, compact type rather than the full carry handle to allow for optics to be mounted on the receiver without removing the rear sight. The stock stored the battery and is a collapsible crane type stock that stores the battery, and sits on a six-position stock tube that gives maximum options for length of pull.

The battery uses low-resistance contacts previously found mainly in AEPs.

The battery is the easiest fit of all AEGs i've ever had the privilege to handle, no wires or cramming into sight spots. Just slide it in and you're done.
In preparation to shoot, the battery must be charged. The SOPMOD uses it's own type of battery with unique connector contacts for insertion into the crane stock, not dissimilar than Tokyo Marui's MP7 or EBB batteries. The battery is clipped to the adapter that is then attached to the specific Tokyo Marui SOPMOD charger. Replacing the battery on the SOPMOD is how ALL BATTERIES SHOULD BE CHANGED. It is so easy and streamlined (check out the video to see for yourself). You squeeze of the stock butt plate by pressing on two latches and the plate pops right off, but is secure enough that it shouldn't come of in a skirmish. Slide in the battery in and replace the cover. No fiddling with different sized connecter pins, or wrestling with the wires to fit into a cramped space. It is a drop-in operation. And by using two tracks of connecters along the inside of the crane stock, the stock can be collapsed all the way even with a battery inside. It would be nice to see other companies and models of guns utilizing specially made battery compartments and contacts. On the other hand, such a system limits the aftermarket battery and stock options available for the SOPMOD, making it incompatible with other stock tubes or even stocks.

The lever at the back of the magazine is responsible for activating the bolt-stop.

A 430 round magazine is available for those of us with itchy trigger fingers.
You'll need a speed loader to load the standard 82 round magazine as the SOPMOD does not come with a loading tube, but the loading tube makes a poor excuse of a loading tool anyway. Immediately upon glancing at the magazine you can see that it is not a standard m4 magazine. The M4 SOPMOD magazine is longer. That's because the SOPMOD's magazine is closer to the real steel length and will fit better in pouches made for real magazines. As an added plus, the magazine follower is longer than the average midcap's and will feed every last bb. A high capacity magazine is also available in 430 rounds but lacks the ability to feed every last round and to activate the bolt stop when empty.

When your midcap is empty, the bolt catch protrudes and requires you to tap it before resuming the carnage.

Which brings me to the most interesting feature on the SOPMOD. The bolt catch. Previously this has solely been the domain of Systema Professional Training Weapons and Gas guns. What this function does is it makes the weapon cease to fire after the last round has left the chamber. This works by the follower pressing up against a series of levers once the last round is loaded. The lever can be seen from the upper rear section of the magazine. This in turn disconnects the power from the motor causing the M4A1 SOPMOD from firing blanks while an empty magazine is loaded. To resume firing, you remove the empty mag and hit (gently please) the bolt catch. On the real M4 the bolt is then released from a held-back position to load another round into the chamber ready for firing. On the SOPMOD it simply re-engages the motor. This is the same method of reloading from the real firearm making this one realistic piece of airsoft hardware to shoot and skirmish with.

To add even more realism this m4 has a blowback and recoil engine. On semi auto, the recoil is little, simply giving a reassuring thump on your shoulder every time you shoot. It is not enough to put you off target but it's there and noticeable. Compared to the recoil felt from a WESTERN ARMS GBB M4 I'd reckon it's about 20-30% as strong. On full auto the recoil is more substantial and the gun jumps in your hands. I also noticed that the blowback slamming home at every shot overpowered the engine noise and made an amazing CLACK-CLACK-CLACK-CLACK noise as it shot the shooting experience easy to describe: AWESOME!

During the accuracy test shooting the kick made the gun rock in your hands quite hard, it definitely felt like it was affecting your aim but i managed to squeeze of quite a good grouping for ten meters. The pictures of the targets really do it justice. This is an accurate gun right out of the box. The full auto accuracy test surprised me. I was expecting much larger groupings but it turns out the groupings were about the same so the rocking motion was actually not affecting the aim that much, just making it a little harder to keep your eye on the sights.

The only downside for this gun is the lack of non-RIS-attachable custom parts available, however you can still choose from a wide variety of RIS-attachable parts like, vertical grips, RIS covers, lasers, flashlights and grenade launchers, in addition to silencers or other muzzle devices. The realistic reloading and recoil engine makes this gun one of the most fun that i have had the privilege to shoot. The availability of both midcap magazines with the realistic stop-function and high capacity for those who desire it. Combined with very high out-of-the-box accuracy and an authentic look and feel i come to the conclusion that this gun has all the bang that you can expect from a high quality manufacturer."

If it wasn't for my fascination with all things HK, I would jump onto that quickly! However, if this type of AEG proves popular, which no doubt it will, then I think we can expect a collection of favourites resurfacing.....

The Badger Confesses

Ok, Ok, Ok!

So I have been a little removed from my postings here. Your RIF and its several magazines, spares and custom parts probably all came from the one place, but for some ungodly reason the rest of your kit cannot. Times are changing people. The time is now and the place is www.tactical-uk.co.uk .

I have found that the problem with a lot of retailers is that they just do not have a focus on what they want to sell. Outdoors and Adventure dabble in lower end RIF's whilst the major RIF retailers dabble in lower end kit. My problem with this is the sour taste it leaves in the mouth of the unwary. As a new combatant in the Airsoft arena you have either a fantastic rifle but ripped knees and wholed mag pouches, or look like an extra from Ghost Recon wielding a see through 1911 and 0.12g bb's.........

First Impressions of Tactical Kit:

Tactical Kit has a quick loading and a visually superior website to most others. It is crisp and clean cut providing superbly simple navigation to the user. The website images and photography is professional and uncluttered with the corporate logo being subtle yet eye catching. It has the look of a focussed and business orientated website, it has the poise of a site that isn't just the front for a teenager with ebay gear to flog.

Now this is the snazzy part about Tactical Kit. Here is a website which does as it says on the tin; they sell tactical kit. The big names are there but what is more important, so is the quality. It is also fair to say that no matter how hard I searched, there wasn't a Taiwanese Crapsoft for sale anywhere!

The products they stock range from boots to boilers, from Magpull loops to Molle vests. The selection is not only varied but also of high quality. It is quite apparent that Tactical Kit are in business to sell the best. This is not by any means a cover for high prices though. I have spent many a fruitless hour searching the internet looking for deals on kit and can safely say that Tactical Kit are not outlandishly priced. If anything can be used as a moniker for this retailer, it is this; "The best Kit for the best prices."

It is my hope that in the coming months more people use Tactical Kit and discover the sense of a retailer that sticks to selling one type of stock. The proof of it working is out there already in firms such as Flecktarn. It isn't rocket science after all; know your stock and your customers will know you.

Go there now: http://www.tactical-kit.co.uk/

Firesupport News: New Stock

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212888035406096082" style="FLOAT: left; I have shown you my inital thinking about how to remain in a Marksman role even if the nature of your mission changes. Close Combat and FIBUA can still accomodate your skill provided you choose / create a carefully selected weapon.

But let's be honest if the truth be known all you want to do in a Marksman role is to take the enemy one by one from distance.

There is a variety of Sniper weapons on the airsoft market and as all airsofters know, their designation as Sniper weapons is a bit dubious. In Real Steel situations a decent marksman can take the performance of his weapon in excess of other weapons in the squad. In airsoft its not really that different. That is unless you decide to use everything the law gives you to play with.

In the UK the maximum single shot limit at most airsoft sites is 500 feet per second with a 0.20g bb. When you take this into comparison with normal AEG's only being allowed 328 feet per second, you are gaining an extra 50% but sacrificing automatic fire.

Fundamentally as a marksman if you have to sacrifice automatic fire you require a lot better accuracy. Enter the next and final (i promise), Heckler and Koch-a-like:

The MSG-90

As you can see from the picture above or at least from the link, the MSG-90 looks just like a G3 SG-1. Its heritage is certainly closer to that, than the PSG-1 that has claimed so much fame in the media. As a result it also helps you as an airsoft customiser to find parts.

To get a close to perfect look I would suggest sourcing the following. It will push the power limit close to 500fps and will offer better than average accuracy. However do remember than to remain legal you will have to 'neuter' the fire selector to only allow semi and safe.

Tokyo Marui HK G3 SG-1

First Factory MSG-90 Rifle Kit

PDI 6.01 469mm Inner

Systema Mechabox M150

Tokyo Marui Low Profile Mount

G&G MSG-90 Buttstock

Intellect 9.6v 3600mah

Tokyo Marui G3 Magazine Lo-Cap

Tokyo Marui G3 Magazine Lo-Cap

Tokyo Marui G3 Magazine Lo-Cap

The MSG-90 in my opinion is better looking than the PSG-1. It was designed for military use and it is a lower cost alternative to the pricey PSG-1. It is certainly a weapon which is not common on the skirmish field, unlike the M14 and SPR variants of late.

The beauty of this weapon is much like the SR25. You can utilise the semi automatic action and higher capacity magazines over conventional bolt action rifles. This means that though you have sacrificed full auto, such a loss for a marksman with a scope and quick action semi, is not a loss at all.

Finally remember that there is one other advantage to owning this weapon. You can make it look just like a regular 'run of the mill' SG-1, and no one will blink an eyelid at you. Well, not until you begin dropping them one by one!

To come: A shock revelation, no more H&K......... but certainly more marksman custom rifles.

<link rel='related' href='http://www.hkpro.com/msg90.htm' title='Creative Juices.......Or Is It Gun Oil? (The picture to the left is a stock photo, not the finished product of this blog).I am a big fan of all things H&K and make no secret of this. However it certainly says a lot when the Real Steel version can be covered in sand, water, and have all manner of things done to it, and still fire 25000 rounds without stoppage.

With this version I was more interested in its use as a primary role. It is for this reason that I added a full stock to it. This allows for better balance of the weapon, as well as more option over battery sizes.

Once again I have tried to keep the modular aspect of the rifle clean. M16 magazines are carried by pretty much everyone. If you play alone, or in a team of various rifles you will never be far away from an M4 or M16 variant.

Here's the list (parts available from http://www.wolfarmouries.co.uk/):

Tokyo Marui HK G36C

328 Upgrade (ask for upgrade inc bat and stock)

G&P G36 Kit

PDI 6.01 500mm Inner

Star G36 4x scope

Private Prts Magwell Conv Kit

G&P G36 Ex Stock

G&P 9.6v 3300mah

Tokyo Marui 68rnd Magazine

Tokyo Marui 68rnd Magazine

Tokyo Marui 68rnd Magazine

Tokyo Marui 68rnd Magazine

The fun doesn't end there folks. I think I've fallen in love.

The following information was taken from the Wolf Armouries website:

"Tokyo Marui Ak74 Blow back Electric (AEG)
Firing mode: Semi/Full
Mag Capacity: 480 Rounds
Velocity: Approx 290-300 fps
Weight: Approx To be confirmed
Hop Up: Yes (adjustable)
Battery: 8.4V small
Automatic Electric Gun
Gun DOES NOT include battery or charger

Type:

The AK74 is an updated version of the infamous AK47 being chambered for a smaller round and enjoying improved construction. The Marui airsoft version combines excellent reliability, an improved power output, metal body and most notably an electric blowback. This means the bolt flies back each time you fire a shot, making it extremely realistic and loud! This is by far one of the best airsoft replicas yet and marks a new standard for future guns.

Construction:

Metal:, All parts except grip and stock.

Plastic: Grip, magazine and stock.

Unlike Marui previous releases, the AK74 has a metal receiver making it feel very realistic and also giving it strength to ensure it will last.

Accessories:

Magazines are available in: 480 rounds high cap. Please note, regular AK type magazines are not compatible. -More AK74 accessories are to be confirmed. -AK accessories such as slings and mag pouches will be well suited to this gun.
Performance - BB Velocity: Approximately 290-300 fps. As with most airsoft guns, each production batch will vary slightly.- Battery: Can accept 8.4V small Battery is stored inside the front upper handguard.

Pros:

As with other Marui guns, this product is extremely reliable and well made internally.-The metal receiver gives this gun great realism and also good structural strength. -The electric blowback is a very impressive feature which is sure to impress you and turn heads on the skirmish field.-The stock is foldable so that it can easily be used indoors as well as out.

Cons:

The AK74 is a full sized rifle and may not be suited for those who prefer a compact gun.

Gun DOES NOT include battery or charger

Price excluding VAT: £297.86

Price including VAT: £349.99

Status: In stock"

Creative Juices.......Or is it Gun Oil? A love for Airsoft, imagination and the Internet.

Lately I have spent too many hours pondering over airsoft retailer websites. The vast assortment of items to increase your fps, increase your 'Gucciness' or just increase your stock length are fantastic. I look with glistening eyes at the screen late into the night mentally configuring my weapons. Hours whizz past and I find myself no further forward than I was six hours previous.

The major problem is not the time, or loss of it, but more the lack of commitment. Yes, I am a man. I lack commitment to my weapons. There I said it.

From one day to the next I change my 'dream' loadout. Lately I have remained stalwart to my conviction that I perform (if that word can ever be used with me) far better in a DM or Designated Marksman role. It literally comes from my inate ability at remaining motionless and inactive for immense periods of time. So to combine this 'ability' with airsoft, I require an accurate long range weapon.

I look. I look at Tokyo Marui VSR's, Maruzen APS2's, Tanaka M700's and then give up. What I long for are special, not mass produced, but I'm not able to afford the custom made weapons. It is then when the personal customisation thought dwells with me. Then it all gets worse. I will spend hours looking at springs, pistons and parts to finally decide that a stock G36C is quite cool.

Infuriating is but a word.

Below I have put together a list of current ideas for my custom creations. All are commercially available, because I am not, nor ever will be, a lathe man.

Let's start with my least imaginative work:

H&K G36C

All parts from Redwolf Airsoft:

Tokyo Marui HK G36C

PDI 6.01 247mm Inner

Private Prts Magwell Conv Kit

Laylax Large Foregrip

Intellect 8.4v 4200

Tokyo Marui 68rnd Magazine

Tokyo Marui 68rnd Magazine

Tokyo Marui 68rnd Magazine

Tokyo Marui 68rnd Magazine

My thinking behind this has been primarily CQB (CQC in the US). There is a reason behind this. Firstly, as a sniper or marksman in the airsoft world, you are usually restricted to engaging at ranges of 30ft or less. This leaves you terribly exposed in environments where the maximum range is less than 30ft. Think FIBUA or CQB. So it was my idea to combine a CQB weapon with suitable accuracy and the capability to be 'modular' allowing for a coherence between it and perhaps an SPR or SR-16. After all the Armalite series of weapons are the most popular, and with the Private Parts (it is a Real Steal part too you know) magazine conversion, it saves BadgerOne valuable coin.

I did consider fitting a G&P 4x scope (inc rail) to it, but that kind of removes the benefit of having a short light close quarters weapon. The bigger handguard was added in preference to a full stock (which I would prefer), but again would defeat the point of having an 'up close and personal' weapon.

Tomorrow I will invite you into the next level of this thought process. We received one of these working prototypes from Systema this month, and have been very impressed with the response and performance of this incredible new design. For those unfamiliar with this famous company, Systema is to Marui like what AMG is to Mercedes Benz. From the masterminds of AEG upgrade technology and the creators of the Professional Training Weapon; the Revolution gearbox from Systema makes a leap to improve the AEG operation by deriving PTW technology into a shell, that drops right in the place of your obsolete Version 2 gearbox. Featuring a revolutionary (pun intended) design free of sensitive parts like the tappet plate, cut-off lever and anti-reverse latch, this computer controlled piece of intelligent engineering is really racing to develop the breed. The gearbox of the Marui Man from 1991 is ready for a well deserved retirement! You can now turn your traditional Marui-design automatic electric gun into an economical version PTW!

Scheduled to be released in time for the summer season of 2008, the Systema Revolution gearbox is the future top-tier solution for upgrading an AR-15 type AEG that uses a Version 2 gearbox. The Revolution is a drop-in fit for the Tokyo Marui M4/M16 series, and will fit most other brands as well, provided that they are made to a high enough standard and measurements close to Tokyo Marui. As with the traditional full gearbox upgrades from Systema, we are not expecting any issues using this with G&P and Classic Army receivers. ICS will not be compatible, due to the split design and modified receiver dimensions.

Compatibility with the V2 gearbox stops at the surface. The Systema Revolution gearbox mimics the V2 on the outside so it can be used with the common AEG, but an entirely different heart is beating on the inside. Note the extra beefy walls of this near gearbox, which is designed to withstand high powered springs for mind-blowing power levels unseen in traditional Marui-type guns.

ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT
An ingenious trigger unit called the E.C.U. is integrated into the Revolution. As the trend is with high performance electric guns, the design uses MOSFET components to allow a smooth flow of electrons from the battery to the motor, and eliminate arcing and high currents from the trigger unit. Instead of a mechanical cut-off lever, the E.C.U. has an optical sensor to detect the movement of the sector gear at all times.

First of all, the optical sensor allows the factory-programmed chip to make the gun shoot once on semi, and once only. Even a quick tap on the trigger activates the cycle, which doesn't leave the spring half-cocked like a traditional AEG does. This feature was exclusive for the PTW, but now it is available for AEG users as well.

Because the E.C.U. "knows" the position of the gears at all times, it will always stop the firing cycle in the same spot. Adding more current or active braking (by reversed polarity) when necessary, the E.C.U. keeps the shooting cycle consistent shot after shot. This allowed to omit another small mechanical part, namely the anti-reversal latch. Less moving parts translates to fewer mechanical problems!

The E.C.U. makes a proper three round burst possible as well, instead relying on complex mechanical parts or an inconsistent timer system as seen in older designs. As with real firearms, the burst stops as soon as the trigger is released, even if three rounds were not fired at that point. In fact, this circuitry can allow programming any number of rounds to be fired automatically on each trigger pull. So a 6 or 7 round burst is possible though it's not clear at this point whether Systema will make that user programmable.!

MECHANICAL ADVANCEMENTS
The tappet plate is one Achille's heel of a traditional AEG gearbox design. Why reinforce it when you don't even need one? Pioneered with the PTW, the Revolution gearbox has a new nozzle design; the loading movement is achieved with a flexible fit to the piston head. This makes the nozzle movement linear, and eliminates the old fragile part from the equation entirely. The nozzle is pulled back and released from an O-ring within the piston head as the piston moves. As a fine side-effect we expect the gearbox to be even more durable in the front, compared to the reinforced V2 gearbox.

The piston is considered to be the "consumable" part in any AEG. With the Revolution, this is addressed again with a PTW-style solution. By reducing the spring diameter, Systema achieved more freedom in the design of the piston. It is now an enclosed polymer part with an all steel tooth rack below, while other metal tooth piston designs have been open from the "belly" to allow sufficient space for the tooth rack. As a result the spring does not rub against metal, and the tooth rack stays on under the load of even the strongest springs. In case you were wondering, this is not the traditional red cylinder offered by Systema in the past for regular gearbox upgrades. This is the same super strong piston (which also happens to be red color) used in the PTW MAX guns.

THE REVOLVING REVOLUTION
As the gearbox was improved so far ahead compared to a traditional design already, Systema decided to make the gear train their way, instead of reinforced parts following the Tokyo Marui form. The gear train consists of four gears to transfer the power from the motor to the piston. The sector gear has a slightly larger module (tooth size) to engage the piston, and is fitted with 7 mm bearings for strength. Two spur gears and a bevel gear are machined to tight tolerances with a smaller module to reduce gear noise and improve efficiency. These three gears are supported by two 6 mm ball bearings each, and allow a wide range of gear ratios to be developed later on.

Because of the additional gear in the gear train, the motor was redesigned to run in reverse. While a DC motor would turn the other way simply by reversing polarity, it will not give peak performance in the "wrong" direction. The motor of the Revolution gearbox features superbly strong Neodymium rare earth magnets, ball bearings, a steel pinion and hand-wound armament for the highest performance money can buy.

Pricing for this revolutionary gearbox has not yet been set yet but check back for more information as it becomes available from Systema. RedWolf Airsoft is the official distributor for Systema in Asia, UK and parts of Europe."

Let's pray the price is reasonable. I for one could certainly see this being billed on my credit card soon!

Elite Action Games: Dorking

EAG Dorking is situated in a large pleasant countryside location not too far from the A24. This means that it is an extremely accessible site for players based in South London, Brighton, Central Kent etc.

Dorking is a relatively new woodland site and opened on 17th June 2007. It is a woodland site with a twist. There is plenty of the usual woodland cover; ferns, bracken and fallen trees. The organisers have realised that players want more than just foliage and have spent a lot of time preparing extras. There is a large fort which has been designed to accomodate at least 20 players in a two level defensive position, networks of trenches, bunkers, village huts, barricades, oil drums and vehicles. The standard of these extra items of cover are high quality, with good structural integrity and with a planned / tactical element to them.

The structures have been set up with games in mind allowing retreats, reinforcements etc. In fact the layout seems to indicate much bigger things are in store (but time will tell on that one). The woodland itself is a mixture of open woods and dense bracken which varies in colour and coverage as the year progress. Open areas have been specially created around structures such as the village as would be the case in the real world. This allows for a mixture of games where a great deal of player skills are tested.

Dorking has a lively buzz to it. The access to the site is via a fishing / camping site and next door to the site is a paintball firm. This means that there is ample parking available and toilet facilities. Included with all this is the availability of a hot lunch and soft drinks. There is provision of airsoft accessories for players as well as weapons etc. In fact everything is catered for.

It has to be said that EAG Dorking is a professional outfit. From the start of the day there is ample communication to players in the safezone about what is going on, who needed to do what, where and when things were to be done by. The registration forms, chrono'ing and safety talk all followed a similar structure. Everything is done in order to keep the day moving swiftly, whilst avoiding confusion for new players.

Two main things are of great importance at EAG; safety and the removal of cheating. The Marshalls are vigilant on both grounds and never drop their guard. Always close to the action they watch for anything which may be untoward and have no problem about pulling players aside if they are caught violating safety or game rules. The message is simple; play fair, play safe. Cheats will be warned once and if they persist will be thrown off the site. Ultimately it is the best way to deal with this behaviour.

The games were well organised and all the particular boundries, objectives and safety points were made clear in the pre-game briefings. Game lengths were determined mainly by the speed of the opposing forces in achieving their objectives. Game styles ranged from defend / capture to patrol / ambush as well as against the clock missions. All the time the marshalls give support and offer advice as well as gentle /motivation.

The price structure is good value. The fees are:

Walk on / Green fee: £20.00

Rental (inc gun, and camo): £35.00

These prices include lunch.

EAG Dorking is an excellent site. This is because of two factors 1) The large varied and fun playing area and 2) The excellent staff.

There are planned changes to the site in the next few months. Some of these being the addition of armoured vehicles, extra structures such as houses and the addition of new styles of games involving novel new technologies. Tom Andrews and John Clancy have a good reputations in our sport and have certainly continued to increase their reputation with the high standard at Dorking.

For anyone based in the Kent / Surrey and South London areas this site will (as their website puts it) "be one of the best in the country".......I think they will be right.

Tokyo Marui HK G36C at Airsoft-Direct.co.uk

From the Airsoft Direct press release:

"The Tokyo Marui Heckler & Koch G36C has been awaited for with anticipation and in the short time from its release it has become one of the most successful replica’s available.

This replica is based on the Heckler & Koch G36C which is a compact version of Heckler & Koch G36; which gives the G36C the dimensions of a submachine gun, but with the firepower and penetration of a rifle round. This makes the Tokyo Marui Heckler & Koch G36C a modern, compact and an extremely functional replica, just like what it is based on.
The Tokyo Marui G36C replicates nearly all the features of the real H&K gun and many of these are extremely useful in Airsoft. The first of these is the use of picatinny rails on the carry handle for mounting sighting devices and under the handguard, perfect for vertical grips. Other optional picatinny rails can be purchased and these mount on the sides of the handguard giving even more flexibility.

Both the cocking lever to access the hop-up and the fire selector are both ambidextrous, perfect for both right and left handed users. The magazines have one of the most interesting and useful features, just like the real G36 magazines they can be clipped together easily without the need for magazine clamps. The included Tokyo Marui H&K G36C Standard 50 Round Magazine also features realistic plastic bullets that are visible through the semi transparent magazine body and hide the feeding mechanism, giving a very realistic look.
The Tokyo Marui G36C is powered by a Mini-SD type battery which is located in the handguard, this is easily accessed by removing a single pin and removing the handguard from the gun. Just like the real Heckler & Koch G36C the Tokyo Marui replica features a folding stock which allows the gun to be carried and stored very easily. This folding stock is also extremely well made and robust which gives both the stock itself and the gun a solid feel.

Another great feature of this gun is the use of the EG1000S motor, giving improved speed, torque, efficiency and has a quieter running noise. All of these features have combined to make one of the most popular Airsoft rifles ever produced.

Specifications:

Calibre: 6mm Plastic BB

Muzzle Velocity: Approximately 295 fps (90 m/s) with 0.20g BBs

Rate of Fire: 750-850 Rounds per Minute

Weight: 2,450g (Empty) / 2,850g (Including Magazine and Battery)

Length: 500mm / 718 mm (Stock Folded / Stock Unfolded)

Included Magazine: Tokyo Marui H&K G36C Standard 50 Round Magazine

Optional High Capacity Magazine: Tokyo Marui H&K G36C High Capacity 470 Round Magazine

Trigger Group: Safe, Semi-Auto and Full Auto

Battery Size Used: Mini-SD (Not Included)

Inner Barrel Length: 247 mm

Motor: EG1000S Hi-Torque

Gear Box: Version 3

As with all Tokyo Marui A.E.G’s included with the replica is a standard magazine (50 Round), a cleaning rod, a bb loading rod, approximately 200 0.25g Tokyo Marui BB's, a Tokyo Marui catalogue and a manual.

Our price: £154.98"

Now if that is not a bargain I don't know what is. 'SOCOM' is an acronym that refers to the United States Special Operations COMmand, and as such indicates a "special forces" role for this weapon. Tokyo Marui states it is as at home in the woods as it is in CQB environments. The airsoft weapon is based on the SOCOM II version by Springfield Armory which to all intents and purposes is a shortened M14.

Rifle Furniture and Quality

Unlike the other M14's in the Tokyo Marui series, the SOCOM is neither an imitation wood stock nor an olive drab plastic. It is stocked with a matt black 'Sandstone' finish which is chequered in the appropriate handling areas. The grips work nicely and I have found that they provide comfortable support no matter what nature throws at you.
The Rifle comes complete with a fore and rear sling attachment which for some people may be a real requirement due to the weapon's weight. The rifle weighs in at 4.0 kg including a loaded mid-cap magazine. I have found the sling to be a nuisance and not really needed on a rifle of such a short length. The rear sight is fully adjustable and effective for puritans who do not wish to fit a scope. Did someone say scope? Yes. The SOCOM is fitted out of the box with a scope rail halfway down the rifle in the "Scout" position. This is so called due to the ability to fit a low powered red dot scope to help acquire targets quickly whilst providing eye relief for peripheral vision; as would be required by a scout. I have not gone for that method and prefer the iron sights. I see the SOCOM, like the M14, as a beautiful rifle and like to keep it so. In addition to this the iron sights work perfectly well at airsoft engagement ranges. The entire rifle is metal (except the stock) and the casting of the metal is to a very high standard. It adds to the structural integrity and gives you satisfaction that it can shrug off minor knocks. Naturally this is what helps the rifle weigh down the scales, but once the battery is installed the SOCOM rests naturally in the shoulder.

Performance

In my reviews I base the ability of the weapon to skirmish as priority in preference to punching paper. As most Airsofters will intend to skirmish with this weapon, I have to say that the sturdiness of the gun gives you confidence to actually "use" it. The rifle has two firing methods, semi-automatic and fully automatic. This in my opinion is heresy. Where has this harsh criticism come from? Well let me explain. The Real Steel version of the M14 range initially started life in Vietnam as a company / squad support weapon. Firing 7.62mm (originally .30-06) rounds this proved to be too unstable for soldiers on fully automatic and subsequently meant that its intended use as a squad support weapon was redundant. This is not to say that it wasn't a fantastic rifle. It's accuracy was second to none. Thus this led to a change in its field role and is still in use today in various guises as a Designated Marksman Rifle. As a result I would have felt happier if Tokyo Marui has left it as a semi-automatic only version. but then, the market dictates and the mob rules. On Semi-automatic firing the rifle is consistent and accurate. It's stock performance out of the box is under 1J at around 290fps (0.20g bb) and the hop up unit provides enough lift to keep your rounds airborne over distances up to 50 yards (approx 45m). It has a tiny spread of 11 inches at this range, which is astounding for what is essentially a smooth bore rifle. This level of accuracy and distance may not be on par with the higher powered sniper rifles about today, but it certainly can out range most other standard AEG's. This therefore provides players with a fully automatic option which will out range standard M16's and the like. Handy, if you like that sort of thing. The gearbox is Tokyo Marui's new version 7 and I am reliably informed it is the easiest box to work on. I cannot vouch for this since I haven't taken it apart and frankly am not likely to need to. The gearbox sounds tight and smooth. Even 'double taps' feel predicted by the gearbox!

Outside Modifications

In theory it is possible to have all the bells and whistles hanging from this rifle. Thanks to the 20mm mount for the "scout" positioned sight, the more inventive of you could purchase Guarder RIS rings and hang lasers, teapots and bread makers from the sides. However, it isn't needed. The addition of a small red dot scope may suit some players, but that and possibly a sling is all the add-ons this rifle really needs. The intimidating sight of a naked rifle in the hands of a decent marksman, with a weapon that can and WILL deliver is really all the help you will need.

Summary

To put it mildly this rifle is excellent. It does so much in a relatively simple looking package. The weight of the rifle is closer to the Real Steel due to the sturdy metal construction and gives the user piece of mind. It is reliable, consistent and quiet. It is true to say that the Chinese are bringing out decent quality copies, but to be honest I feel that the SOCOM was worth every penny of my money. It is certainly a rifle that is for keeps.

Tokyo Marui HK PSG-1 Review

The PSG-1 ("Prazisions-Scharfschutzen-Gewehr", German for "precision sharpshooting rifle") is a sniper rifle. It was designed as a semi-automatic rifle with a large capacity magazine. This was in response to German marksman's sluggish response times in hostage situations with bolt action rifles. Now this rifle is used by many counter-terrorist and security organisations. The PSG-1 has achieved an acclaim in the Airsoft community too. In a sport where distances are measured in yards does the PSG-1 really deliver enough to the aspiring sniper?

Rifle Furniture & Quality

The first impressions when removing the rifle out of the box was the size and weight. It certainly won't do you any favours in a CQB environment! It will if you are outside looking in however. The worst part is the bodywork because it is poor. It is not poor in its detail but because it is made entirely from plastic. It isn't even a particularly good plastic. The mechanics and the barrel are metal and well made. The rigidity with the bodywork removed is very solid. So with this strange range of build quality we come to the grip. The 'wooden' hand grip could have been made from wood it would have added a lot to this rifle. Tokyo Marui instead used more plastic. It isn't a big issue, but when paying the amount of money the PSG-1 costs, it is nice to get a touch of class. In addition to this, after repeated use the bodywork does tend to creak a bit. All this is easily fixed with after market custom parts, but it feels a bit unfair to have to do this.
Despite this it is a comfy rifle. The grip doesn't cause issues in the field and the stock is adjustable for shoulders and cheeks. In fact there is a certain element of the real steel included in this rifle. Firstly the weight which is heavier than most AEG's certainly adds to the feel of it being a sniper rifle, and helps focus the mind into the role. The rifle stock can be adjusted by use of a special key required to move the cheek piece and stock butt about. This is included in the box. Inside the stock is the large battery and it is very easy to connect. The whole sniper loadout can be added to with bipod mounts if needed, but this has to be bought as an extra. It certainly would help keep this heavy rifle steady and on target. The detailed markings are apparent on the rifle yet with its plastic looks it doesn't really fool anyone. It gets better though. Included (not an extra) with the rifle is the pre-attached 4x magnification Edgar Brothers scope. It works but is not variable. This isn't too much of an issue especially over airsoft skirmish distances. The sight from the scope is good and would certainly offer a level of extra help to the user though not enough to account for wind / Bullet drop. But at least it is included.

Performance

The best feature of this weapon is its performance. The barrel is metal and long. So the accuracy is very good at range. There has been no occasion of barrel wobble or any other problems. In fact as a weapon goes I found this more reliable than the G3. As for other sniper rifles I am certain that this is NOT the best. Sorry but it is true. There are better models on the market and if you truly are a sniper / marksman, you will know this anyway. But if you like the look, like the Metal Gear Solid game or just like the feel of it then don't be put off. During skirmishes the PSG-1 has the ability to constantly hit Skirmisher size targets at great length. The combined scope also helps and despite its less than average light capacity, it does mean you can pick off partially concealed targets. The weight helps bed you down and provide a firm rest though with its length it is more appealing to taller marksmen. The PSG-1 has a semi-automatic action. It is not re-cocked via a manual bolt. It does it all itself. So if being prone, quiet and still is in your requirements then this will enable you to do it. It will reload for as long as you have rounds. You should have plenty due to its ability to exchange the lo-cap PSG-1 mag (20 rounds) for a hi-cap G3 one (300 rounds). No more moving on game days for you then.

Summary

All in all it isn't perfect. It is expensive and it is plastic. It is accurate, well weighted and looks the business. It comes with a decent scope and can be given a massive magazine. I like it and found it offered many fun days out especially for those quick 'double-tap' kills.

Tokyo Marui HK MP5 A4 Review

In the 1960's Heckler & Koch, a German weapons manufacturer, began developing a family of sub-machine guns designed to provide close range burst fire to security forces. The MP5 (Maschinenpistole) family has been a widely used and adaptable series of weapons. This is similarly so in the Airsoft world. Walk onto any skirmish site in the U.K and amongst the most popular weapons (other than the Armalites) are variations on the MP5.

Furniture and Quality

The MP5 series has a distinctive design, and the Tokyo Marui version has kept quite true to the Real Steel weapon. The weight of the gun is not heavy, yet heavy enough to give poise and purpose to the user. This is complimented by the sturdy feel of the weapon and the lack of cheap creaking plastic. Naturally the material and colouring of the gun is the standard black part metal / part ABS plastic. The stock is fixed firmly into place like the barrel and receiver. A real rubber butt plate finishes off the stock. On this version the metal parts (not including internals) are the flash hider, front sight assembly, charging handle, charging handle tube (only metal on the HG version), magazine, mag catch, mag release, both sling hooks, trigger, selector switch, rear sight (only metal on the High Grade version). It certainly is enough to give it a realistic feel.
Tokyo Marui have included markings on the weapon to make it look like a real H&K weapon. The fire selector is marked in the usual red and white 'easy to understand' diagram. The fire selector clicks solidly into each firing mode and doesn't slip. On the left hand side of the gun above the magazine it reads "Kal.9mmx19" and on the top of the receiver it is stamped with "HK MP5" and then a fake serial number. The only TM markings are on the right hand side of the gun, again above the magazine well "Made in Japan Tokyo Marui".

Performance

In my reviews I base the ability of the weapon to skirmish as priority in preference to punching paper. As most Airsofters will intend to skirmish with this weapon, mostly CQB too, I have to say that the sturdiness of the gun gives you confidence to "use" it. The standard boxed version includes a 50 round magazine. I adopted the review weapon second hand I had the benefit of two hi-cap magazines. The magazines click firmly into place inside the magazine well. Once you are ready to fire the ambidextrous selector switch can be easily flicked to your preferred firing rate. The single (semi-automatic) selection is quite good offering a stable base to pick off targets as well as 'double tapping' with ease. Flicking the selector upwards further to the automatic setting unleashes a high rate of fire. Careful attention to the hop setting must be made to maximise this guns potential. So how does it perform? The MP5 naturally has a short barrel. Don't be put off by this though. The MP5 isn't really a distance platform and is ideally suited to closer engagement ranges akin to CQB and urban sites. In these arenas it performs accurately and can hit targets (skirmisher sized) out to 25m. The large 8.4v battery offers a good rate of fire. This has never been of too much importance to me because I prefer to keep my weapons on semi. In this way the battery will certainly last all day, on fully auto it is not so likely. The hop up unit is a tad tricky to get precisely right. It is located on the left side of the gun just where the foregrip meets the receiver. The switch doesn't offer too much indication of how far is too much etc. However, a little bit of trial and error sorts that out. Down range the balance of size and power is slightly hindered by the accuracy of the short barrel. Burst fire is really the best method for this standard weapon in a woodland scenario. The accuracy is compensated for by the full metal front and rear sights. The usual cylindrical rear sight is fully adjustable and offers good eye relief (with goggles). Do not be put off by this. After all attempting to use any weapon outside its environment you will be upset with its performance. Inside a CQB arena things are different. The small size is very handy for sweeping in and out of rooms, and the stock can sit under the armpit if you are in a really enclosed area. The accuracy is excellent for close range engagements and the options on the rear sight allow your eye plenty of light options. The easy to line up foresight and compact weight really put it into a class of its own. Well it did until the G36 and UMP came along. Impressed? In its own environment yes, it handles, fires and is strong enough to take the occasional light knock.

Inside

The MP5 is simple to take apart and simple to put back together. The access to the mechbox (something I have never opened) and other parts you need to maintain is easy. The gun offers a lovely foundation for those who wish to upgrade. This being said though, I am of the opinion that when replacing the spring with a stronger one to also swap the spring guide for an upgraded one. Experience has shown that others who haven't have had the plastic tabs on the standard version break. Upgrading an MP5 in my opinion is not required for the U.K. A tightbore barrel in CQB will change a 2 1/2" group to a 2" group, and for the price it isn't worth it. If upgrading an MP5 is your thing then look on the outside.

Outside

MP5's have been used in such a variety of situations that tactical manufacturers have been churning out plenty of tactical additions. Laser dots, flashlights, aimpoints etc can all be bought for this series and some Airsoft retailers have aftermarket spares for the real Special Forces wannabes. Personally I like my weapons to remain virgin, but it has to be said I am more at home in woodland than CQB. If you need a cheap (now that the G36C is out these have come down in price) or starter short to medium range AEG with plenty of upgrade options, go for an MP5.

Summary

Tokyo Marui make decent weapons. The MP5 series was one of the most popular for a reason and that is reliability, utility and after market extras. I would never have assumed I would need one until borrowing one to use. They are a fun little piece with the added advantage of being utterly dependable and fantastic for indoor combat.
